About

It all started at the top of Africa’s highest point on August 16, 2001. With the single-minded vision of heating up the industry with our dynamic insurance solutions, Camargue Underwriting Managers (“Camargue”) made history by selling its first insurance policy on the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak, an incredible 19 350 feet above sea level.

In August 2016 Camargue celebrated 15 years as a provider of risk management solutions and specialised insurance products to a broad spectrum of industries in South Africa. Our products offer insureds and brokers access to excellent quality paper by way of international spread of risk and unsurpassed financial strength. We provide global market security through our partners at Lloyd’s and Compass Insurance Company Limited.

Our ability to achieve value for our stakeholders is driven by our focused strategy and rigorous attention to the achievement of niche underwriting efficiency. Despite our incredible growth over the last decade, we still realise the importance of meeting and exceeding customer expectations for specialist, comprehensive insurance products and risk management solutions. Therefore, every plan we make, and every product, policy and service we implement, is driven by our M³ philosophy to manage, mitigate and migrate business critical risks on behalf of our customer base. The result is that our clients experience a dynamic blend of risk transfer and business risk management, whereby insurable risks are migrated to the insurance policy, and uninsurable risks are managed and mitigated by risk management services.

2001

Kilimanjaro – First Policy

We began our journey by signing our first policy on the top of Kilimanjaro’s Uhuru Peak.

Camargue Open for Business

We opened our doors for business with a small team and big dreams. With the backing of Hollard Insurance, we set out to become market leaders in the development of niche insurance products and specialist underwriting services – disrupting the industry with a dynamic approach to risk.

Buys back equity stake

In 2006 we purchased Hollard’s equity stake and, through mutual agreement, parted ways. Continuing along our path as industry innovators, we joined forces with independent partners and simultaneously announced that we had been granted Approved Coverholder status by the epicentre of liability insurance – Lloyd’s.

2006

Camargue Scholarship

Joined forces with the WITS School of Economic and Business Sciences to nurture up-and-coming talent in the industry. Created a scholarship worth more than R60 000, which provided much needed support to students who wished to complete a Master of Commerce degree.

We also award a R20 000 scholarship to a promising student as well as a R5 000 Managers Prize for the top achieveing student in the Honours course. Some students who completed their Masters are still with us. 

2007

Merged with Phoenix Underwriting Managers

We increased our business capacity, product range and staff complement. The merger resulted in us offering a total of 10 product lines, and allowed us to offer a more comprehensive solution to the market. 

2010

New Home

Relocated our growing team to Camargue House in Melrose Estate, Johannesburg.

2010

10 Year Anniversary

Celebrated our 10-year anniversary, introducing our new brand to the market; with a revamped look and feel, and an amplified philosophy.

LAB Academy

In 2011 we launched our free Liability Academy for Brokers, to help build their skill levels quickly and effortlessly. The Camargue Academy makes specialist liability insurance accessible to all brokers through training and industry insights.

Camargue LAB training

Approved by the Insurance Institute of South Africa for CPD accreditation. We also launched a new free online guide to navigating the CPA (madeasy.mobi).   

2013

New eLearning initiative

Went digital with a new eLearning initiativeThe eLab: An industry first! D&O was the first eLearning module available followed by the Commercial Crimes module. Camargue was also voted Top PI/Liability UMA in PMRAfrica Diamond Arrow Awards

15 Year Anniversary

15 years of Camargue! Celebrating innovation, expansion and solution-driven, market-leading insurance solutions. We parted ways with M&F (a mutual decision following an equally beneficial six-year partnership). From 1 July 2016, Lloyd’s participation on our binders increases to 75% with the balance of 25% being placed locally with Compass Insurance Company Limited (“Compass”).

Going Global

Partnering for progress. Our new relationship with Lloyd’s allows us to take our business global. Going forward, Camargue will continue its long-standing relationships with Lloyd’s, Brit Limited and Hannover Re, while Compass will deliver the local capacity. Lloyd’s participation will continue to be led by Brit Syndicates Limited followed by a number of prominent Lloyd’s syndicates: Channel Managing Agency Limited, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Underwriting at Lloyd’s Limited, ANV Syndicates Limited, and Antares Managing Agency Limited.
